AMARILLO, Texas – Drivers in Amarillo are accustomed to navigating the busy highways of I-40 and I-27, often sharing the road with motorcyclists, especially as temperatures rise. However, a recent sight on I-40 caught many motorists by surprise—a man riding a scooter in the middle lane.
Dressed in casual attire—shorts, sneakers, and a t-shirt—the scooter rider was captured on video by a concerned viewer. The footage, submitted to MyHighPlains.com, shows the individual traveling westbound on I-40, passing the Washington Street and Bell Street exits at an estimated speed of 60-65 miles per hour.
While Texas laws regarding motorized scooters are not always specific, they generally align with regulations for mopeds or electric bicycles. According to the Texas Transportation Code, motor-assisted scooters are only permitted on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or lower. They can also be operated on bike paths or sidewalks.
